On February 5, Franciscan University of Steubenville inaugurated a new off-campus residence for pregnant students, named Guadalupe House. The initiative aims to provide these students with a supportive environment that allows them to continue their education during pregnancy.

Dr. Daniel Dentino, vice president of Student Life at the university, stated, “Knowing past students who could have benefited from a home like this made it clear the University had to come up with a better way to support a student living through an unplanned pregnancy.” He added that the Guadalupe House would offer both practical and pastoral support.

Guadalupe House is located near the campus and offers accommodation for up to two semesters at the current on-campus housing rate. It provides stability for students pursuing academic and personal goals, offering both practical assistance and spiritual care.

The house was donated by Heather and Doug Perry, who previously operated it as the Ad Gentes Mission house. Heather Perry said, “After we decided to close the Ad Gentes Mission in 2023, I knew the Lord was asking me to find another purpose for this home to continue serving in a missionary capacity.”

Residents will have access to various services including private rooms, material assistance such as diapers and baby clothing, kitchen facilities, laundry services, and support from an on-site residence coordinator.

Dentino expressed gratitude for the donation: “We are truly grateful for the generous gift of Heather and Doug Perry. Guadalupe House allows us to live our pro-life mission in a very practical way.”

The opening ceremony included a home blessing led by Father Jonathan St. André, TOR, vice president of Franciscan Life. He explained the choice of Our Lady of Guadalupe as the patron saint of the house: “Our Lady of Guadalupe reminds us of the gift of life... She reminds us to care for those who are often marginalized.”
