Rev. Dennis Marion Schnurr Bishop | Archdiocese of Cincinnati website
Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Most Reverend Dennis M. Schnurr from his role as the Archbishop of Cincinnati. In his place, Most Reverend Robert G. Casey, currently an Auxiliary Bishop in Chicago, has been appointed as the 11th Archbishop of Cincinnati.
Archbishop-designate Casey was ordained as a priest in 1994 for the Archdiocese of Chicago and became a bishop in 2018 under Cardinal Blase J. Cupich. Reflecting on his new appointment, Casey stated, “It is with gratitude and humility that I accept Pope Francis’ invitation to serve the present generation of faithful in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.” He expressed appreciation for Archbishop Schnurr's kindness and emphasized his commitment to discipleship and proclaiming the Gospel.
Archbishop Schnurr has served since 2009 and previously held positions including Bishop of Duluth. His resignation follows Canon Law requirements upon reaching age 75 in June 2023. Until Casey's installation, Schnurr will continue as Apostolic Administrator.
Schnurr shared his support for Casey: “It has been my great honor and privilege to serve... It is a great joy to welcome Archbishop-designate Robert Casey to his new home.” He intends to remain active in Cincinnati post-retirement.
The installation ceremony for Archbishop-designate Casey will take place at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter in Chains, with details forthcoming.
