Filipinos from across Florida gathered at the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe on January 26, 2025, to celebrate their devotion to Santo Niño, or Holy Child Jesus. This event commemorates the introduction of Catholicism in the Philippines over five centuries ago. Historical records indicate that Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Cebú in 1521 and presented a statue of the Child Jesus to local royalty upon their conversion.

“It reminds us of who we are as Filipino American Catholics living in the United States,” stated Father Nathanael Soliven, parochial administrator of St. Anthony Parish in Lakeland. “It strengthens our identity.” Originally from Pangasinan, a province in northern Philippines, Father Soliven was ordained three years ago and has been involved with this celebration annually since then. He notes an increasing attendance each year and envisions a time when the basilica might not accommodate all participants.

“Even the first generation of Filipinos born in the U.S. are participating in the celebrations,” he added. “We’re seeing, even though they weren’t born in the Philippines, the tradition is being passed down.”

During Mass, families had their Santo Niño statues blessed while children offered flowers, prayed, sang and received blessings. The community extended their worship outside with Sinulog dances—cultural prayer-dances crafted to honor Santo Niño—which portray historical narratives about Spanish arrivals and conversions.

The Filipino ministry will mark its 20th anniversary within Orlando's Diocese on July 27, 2025—the feast day for Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage (Our Lady of Antipolo)—at this same basilica.
