Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of the Archdiocese of Newark has launched a multi-year pastoral planning initiative titled "We Are His Witnesses." Announced on January 6, 2025, this initiative aims to prepare the archdiocese for future opportunities and challenges as a missionary Church with synodal and co-responsible pastoral leadership.
In his recent newsletter, Cardinal Tobin discussed themes of pastoral conversion and missionary discipleship, drawing from Pope Francis' 2013 Apostolic Exhortation "Evangelii Gaudium" and insights from the Synod on Synodality held between 2021-24. He highlighted that the Final Document from the Synod provides substantial guidance for Churches worldwide.
Bishop Michael Saporito and a dedicated Commission will oversee this planning initiative, ensuring activities align with principles of synodality, subsidiarity, and solidarity. The process will address questions about current challenges in northern New Jersey, opportunities for proclaiming the Gospel in diverse communities, and necessary changes in pastoral ministries.
Cardinal Tobin emphasized the importance of prayerful discernment and dialogue without preconceived solutions. He expressed hope for a true pastoral conversion and deeper missionary discipleship that meets people's needs through Christ.
The Cardinal also quoted "The Joy of the Gospel," stressing the need to reach out to those lacking faith support. He urged active participation in "We Are His Witnesses" to respond to changing times while remaining faithful to their mission.
Pope Francis' final remarks at the Synod's second session underscored harmony within Church diversity. The Pope refrained from issuing an Apostolic Exhortation, believing the Synod's document offers sufficient guidance for Churches globally.
