Cardinal Tobin reflects on significance of John the Baptist during Advent

American Catholic Tribune Dec 6, 2024

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of Newark recently shared a message for the Advent season, reflecting on the role of John the Baptist as a significant figure in preparing for the coming of Jesus Christ. Cardinal Tobin highlighted Pope Francis's insights from two years ago regarding John the Baptist, emphasizing his importance as "the last of a long line of Old Testament prophets" and "herald and precursor" to the Messiah.

In his message, Cardinal Tobin reiterated that John recognized his role as subordinate to Jesus, citing Luke 3:15-17 where John states, “I baptize you with water. But one who is more powerful than I will come... He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.” This acknowledgment marks John's transition as he prepares people for Jesus's arrival.

Pope Francis described John as possessing a "severe figure" necessary to confront hypocrisy among religious and political leaders of his time. According to Pope Francis, John's severity concealed an aversion to falseness, which is crucial in meeting Jesus during Advent—a period characterized by repentance and conversion.

Cardinal Tobin emphasized that both John and Mary accompany believers through this season. He stated, "John the Baptist is 'our principal traveling companion' during this time," alongside Mary who guides towards her son.

The cardinal also announced that this year’s celebration of the Immaculate Conception would be observed on December 9th due to scheduling adjustments. The observance underscores Mary's exemplary holiness and preparation for closeness with Jesus.

In conclusion, Cardinal Tobin encouraged individuals to embrace honesty about their spiritual state during Advent, aiming for growth in holiness by being "allergic to falseness." He closed with well wishes for a blessed Advent season.
