As the Advent season draws near, Our Lady of Good Counsel Retreat House is organizing a 24-hour retreat aimed at preparing participants for this sacred period. The event, open to both men and women, will start on Friday, December 20 at 7 p.m. with the rosary and Mass and will conclude on Saturday with Sunday Vigil Mass followed by a supper at 6 p.m.
Father Gary Coulter, who has been the director of the retreat house for 11 years, will guide this year's retreat. He expressed enthusiasm about integrating spiritual practices with hymns and carols that are significant to the Advent and Christmas seasons. "Some of our most beloved and well-known hymns are Advent and Christmas carols," said Father Coulter. "But even more, they often have a rich history and a theological beauty to them that can deepen our understanding of these holy seasons."
Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on traditional Advent hymns like “Creator of the Stars of Night” and “O Come, O Come Emmanuel,” as well as early Latin Christmas carols such as “Of the Father’s Love Begotten” and “Christ was Born on Christmas Day.” Modern carols including “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “O Little Town of Bethlehem” will also be featured in the retreat experience.
“The theology behind these hymns teaches us about the mystery of the Incarnation and the power of Christ’s birth,” Father Coulter explained. “By reflecting on these songs, we can better prepare ourselves to celebrate the birth of Christ.”
The retreat includes meditations led by Father Coulter, opportunities for Eucharist and Reconciliation sacraments, along with time for silence and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Devotions and quiet reflection are encouraged throughout as attendees seek spiritual renewal in a serene environment.
