Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
Five parishes from the Archdiocese of Louisville have collaborated this fall to sponsor their 11th Habitat for Humanity house. Known collectively as "The Catholic Quintet," St. Albert, St. Bernadette, Epiphany, St. Margaret Mary, and St. Patrick churches are sponsoring a home for Chelsea Boyd.
The parishes raised $50,000 towards the cost of the home and contributed labor to its construction, according to Tricia Burke, a leader at Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville.
On October 24-26, nearly 60 volunteers from these parishes participated in a "raise the roof" event, assisting with the installation of the roof and walls. On October 26, Boyd joined volunteers for a ground blessing ceremony.
The parishes are now rotating volunteer shifts to continue work on the house, which is expected to be completed by early 2025, Burke said.
Boyd has three children and three grandchildren and has long aspired to own a home. An announcement from Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville highlighted her anticipation: "The first thing she is going to do in her new home is fall to her knees, pray and thank God. She cannot wait to sit back and enjoy her new home."
Boyd will be the first in her immediate family to own a home. "She hopes that her journey to homeownership will show her children that they can do it too," stated the announcement.
Burke noted that The Catholic Quintet sponsors a Habitat house every two years and emphasized that Habitat for Humanity of Metro Louisville is seeking volunteers from all parishes. More information can be found at louisvillehabitat.org.
