Defending human dignity and the sacredness of life requires creating economic and social systems that promote the common good, Pope Francis stated. In a message delivered on November 14, he emphasized that focusing solely on certain aspects of life risks being ineffective and may lead to an ideological approach where abstract principles overshadow real people.

The pope highlighted the importance of justice and the common good in defending every human life, particularly those most vulnerable. His message was shared at a conversation organized by the Pontifical Academy for Life, featuring economist Mariana Mazzucato and Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley.

Mazzucato and Mottley are collaborating on the Bridgetown Initiative, which aims to reform the global financial system with a focus on collective welfare rather than individual profit. They argue that while capitalism has potential benefits, governments should use their tools not just to correct errors but to guide spending and investment towards broader societal goals.

Prime Minister Mottley pointed out global challenges such as food distribution inequities and climate change, stressing the need for moral leadership worldwide. She remarked, “We can find a way to put a man on the moon, but we cannot find a way to distribute the ample food and water that exists on earth.”

Mazzucato suggested starting with government procurement processes by ensuring contracts demand environmentally friendly practices from companies, fair wages for workers, and reinvestment in research rather than stock buybacks.

Pope Francis reiterated his call for prioritizing truth and justice through collective efforts. He noted that conflicts often arise from narrow interests, underscoring the significance of recalling the common good as central to church social doctrine.

He advocated for robust economic theories aligned with these principles to inspire political decisions effectively. This aligns with ideas expressed in his encyclical "Laudato si’," urging practical application beyond mere rhetoric.

Archbishop Vincenzo Paglia also addressed attendees about economic disparities caused by extreme capitalism fostering hyper-individualism. He warned this undermines unity essential for peaceful coexistence globally.
