The Marching Monarchs from Aquinas Catholic in David City achieved a Division 1 rating at the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association State Marching Festival on October 26. This marks their first such accomplishment in over thirty years.
The band, consisting of 31 members and four color guards, performed "Man of Steel" by Hans Zimmer. Their performance was enhanced by three middle school percussionists who joined to bolster the ensemble's sound.
Deacon Bob Viergutz, the band's director, is in his second year at Aquinas Catholic Schools and has nearly four decades of experience. He recognized the foundational work of former director Mrs. Helen Ostdiek, who retired after 27 years of service.
Seniors Finley Zook, Sydney Hartman, and drum majorette Bella Comte led the band this year. The Marching Monarchs received four ratings of 1 and two ratings of 2, missing the top rating by less than one point on two occasions.
“I’m just so proud how hard the kids worked this year,” Deacon Viergutz stated. “I can’t imagine another way to end this season.”
With marching season concluded, preparations are underway for upcoming Christmas concerts featuring various bands from Aquinas Catholic. Performances are set for December 11 at 6 p.m. for sixth grade, middle school, and high school bands in the Aquinas MS/HS north gym. The fifth-grade band will perform during the Aquinas Catholic Elementary Christmas program on December 18 at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., also in the same venue.
