Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
In a recent message, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, Archbishop of Newark, reflected on the significance of Mary and the saints in the universal call to holiness. This reflection follows the Church's celebration of The Solemnity of All Saints on November 1st and The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed on November 2nd.
Cardinal Tobin emphasized Mary's role as "the queen of all the saints" and her importance in the history of salvation. He highlighted that Mary lived during a time when religious freedom was under threat and social injustices were prevalent. Despite these challenges, "Mary remained faithful," showing dedication to her family and service to others.
The cardinal explained that all saints look to Mary as an example, stating: "We look to this simple woman from Nazareth to learn how to live as Christ wants us to live." He noted that holiness is not exclusive but rather a universal call given at baptism.
Cardinal Tobin also addressed how saints serve as guides through their daily lives, choices, sacrifices, and devotion. He asserted that their success in living holy lives is due to their closeness to God through prayer. "Saints are men and women who know how to pray," he said.
In times when God seems absent, saints persist in their faith. Cardinal Tobin urged gratitude for all saints and encouraged prayer for their intercession.
Pope Francis' words were included in the message, encouraging people not to fear holiness: "It will take away none of your energy, vitality or joy."
Cardinal Tobin concluded with a prayer for the Archdiocese: "My prayer for all the people of our Archdiocese is that we will take Jesus’ words to heart...and become 'next door saints.'"
The message encourages individuals towards holiness by following examples set by Mary and the saints while maintaining faith even during challenging times.
