Christians are encouraged to seek signs of hope daily, according to Pope Francis. In his introduction to the book "Hope Is a Light in the Night," he emphasizes identifying even small moments of hope each day. The pope writes that living with Christian hope involves recognizing possibilities where they seem impossible and grace amid sin.
The Vatican publishing house has prepared collections of Pope Francis' writings on Christian virtues, including new introductions by him, in preparation for the Holy Year 2025. English translations of these prefaces were published by Vatican News on November 6. The collection on faith is titled "Faith Is a Journey."
Pope Francis chose "Pilgrims of Hope" as the theme for the Holy Year, which will begin on December 24. He highlights the importance of reflecting on Christian hope during challenging times, such as what he describes as a Third World War being fought "piecemeal."
Christian hope differs from optimism; it involves awaiting salvation through God's eternal love. This love gives meaning to life and sustains the world despite human sins.
Pope Francis explains that hope requires responding to God's love and sharing it with others. He suggests finding signs of hope in simple acts like unexpected smiles or kindness at work or school.
He encourages people to train themselves to recognize these hopeful signs, stating that doing so can illuminate their hearts and enable them to become beacons for others.
In his introduction to the book on faith, Pope Francis links faith with pilgrimage, especially relevant during the Holy Year. Walking connects individuals with their surroundings and brings them closer to others' lives.
A pilgrimage serves as a reminder that faith is an ongoing journey toward God. As pilgrims rather than tourists or wanderers, believers have a goal—reaching God—and this journey offers certainty in His awaiting consolation and grace.
