Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin of the Archdiocese of Newark has shared his reflections on the 16th General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops, currently taking place at the Vatican. The assembly, convened by Pope Francis, is focused on embracing synodality and advancing the mission of the Church.
In a message to his congregation, Cardinal Tobin expressed gratitude for representing Newark at this global gathering. He highlighted the importance of synods in guiding Church leaders through deliberations influenced by the Holy Spirit. "Never can a Bishop, or any other Christian, think of himself ‘without others,’" Pope Francis emphasized during his opening address.
The Synod is structured into three phases: preparatory, celebratory, and implementation. Cardinal Tobin noted that Newark participated fully in the first phase initiated by Pope Francis in 2021 and looks forward to implementing its conclusions locally.
Pope Francis reminded attendees that "The Holy Spirit always accompanies us," offering hope and comfort even in challenging times. He urged humility and openness to God's guidance as essential virtues for Church leaders.
The Synod's origins trace back to its establishment by St Paul VI in 1965 during the Second Vatican Council. Recently renewed by Pope Francis through Apostolic Constitution Episcopalis communio, it emphasizes synodality as a core dimension of Church life.
Pope Francis also addressed participants with words of encouragement: "We persevere on this journey fully aware that we are called...to take up our mission." The presence of non-bishops at the assembly reflects an inclusive approach without diminishing episcopal authority.
As Cardinal Tobin prepares to return home after this month-long session, he anticipates sharing insights gained from engaging with diverse voices within the Church community worldwide.
