The Archdiocese of Newark is set to host the 31st Annual Blue Mass on Thursday, November 7, at 10 a.m. at Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. This event will honor New Jersey law enforcement personnel for their dedication and sacrifices.

Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, will lead the Mass. Law enforcement officers from various federal, state, county, and municipal departments and agencies will attend alongside families of deceased officers being recognized. The ceremony will feature police honor guard units, bagpipers, drummers, community members, and high-ranking public officials.

Lieutenant Christopher Whiting of the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and co-chairman of this year’s Blue Mass said: “The Blue Mass is a reminder of the sacrifices police officers make, but it’s also a chance for the community to come together in prayer, reflection, and unity.” He emphasized that this event offers an opportunity to bridge divides and reinforce support for officers both spiritually and publicly.

This year’s service will pay tribute to nine local police officers who died in the line of duty in recent years. Many succumbed to illnesses related to 9/11. The honored officers include New Jersey State Police Trooper Marcellus E. Bethea; Sayreville Police Captain William Gawron; Elizabeth Police Sergeant Michael “Zini” Kurinzi; Port Authority Police Captains Richard L. Ruiz Sr., John M. Collins; Port Authority Police Officers David J. Lee, Anthony J. Mezzacappa, John M. Cortazzo; and New Jersey Transit Police Inspector Robert Noble.

Additionally recognized are Millburn Police Officer Luke Lyons and Fairfield Police Detective James Ciampi for their commitment to law enforcement despite passing away outside of duty.

Whiting noted: “The officers being honored this year were individuals dedicated to their profession, embodying courage, selflessness, and a deep sense of duty.” He added that while their passing is a profound loss, their legacy will be remembered during the Mass.
