The Pittsburg Christian community has responded swiftly to the opening of a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in their city. A Sidewalk Volunteer Training session is scheduled for November 9 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Girard, providing free lunch and materials. Interested participants can register via email or phone.
Amanda Lehman, a resident of Pittsburg, played a key role in organizing the Sidewalk Advocates for Life group. This group maintains a near-constant presence at the city's Planned Parenthood clinic. Lehman explained that they aimed to establish their initiative before the clinic opened its doors. She noted that their training began in Wichita with Stephanie Nemechek from the diocesan Respect Life and Social Justice Office.
Lehman highlighted the peaceful and prayerful nature of their ministry, emphasizing its non-aggressive approach. The first training session took place in June, followed by additional sessions in July, August, and September. Another session is planned for next month.
Currently, nearly 70 Sidewalk Advocates for Life volunteers are active at various times when the clinic operates. Lehman expressed a desire to have continuous coverage during business hours to offer support to women entering the facility.
The pro-life response involves multiple denominations working together, including Catholics, Lutherans, Assemblies of God members, among others. Lehman described this collaboration as beneficial for the community.
Bonnie Toombs from the Respect Life and Social Justice Office praised the dedication of Pittsburg's residents: “The response from the people of Pittsburg has been so amazing to witness, such passion lived out through this life-saving ministry!”
