More than 200 people gathered at the Mary, Mother of God Chapel in Winter Park for the Vigil for the Protection of Life on October 4. The event, which extended into the night, was organized by the Servants of the Pierced Hearts of Jesus and Mary at the request of Bishop John Noonan. It included Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and a rosary to support life from conception to natural death.
Bishop Noonan emphasized that "October is the month of the rosary," noting that it aligns with the order's motto "To Jesus through Mary." He added that this makes it fitting to ask Mary for loving hearts toward mothers and unborn children.
Sister Maria Teresa Acosta highlighted how this vigil complements their ongoing "Every Life is a Gift" campaign initiated by Foundress Mother Adela Galindo. She described it as "a beautiful call...to pray daily...for the defense and promotion of the culture of life."
Deacon Kelvin Berberena led Eucharistic Adoration during which participants were encouraged to connect deeply with Christ. Describing his experience, he said, “We look to Christ for safety...And He is always looking for us.” A poignant moment occurred when an infant reached out towards the monstrance, prompting emotional reactions from those present.
Regular attendees Sal, Dominique, and Francesco Ballacchino shared their personal experiences. Francesco noted his renewed faith journey sparked by his daughter Selena. “I see the grace of God in her,” he said. Sal emphasized that pro-life values start within families: “You can advocate for it...but you have to practice it where you’re at.”
The vigil served as a space for reflection and prayer dedicated to life's protection across generations.
