Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
At the conclusion of the second week of the Synod of Bishops in Rome, Cardinal Tobin reflected on his small study group composed of eleven bishops, clergy, and laity, with whom he continues to engage in meaningful discussions. He stated that this week's dialogue included the topic of "relationships": our relationship with Christ, among ourselves, and within the People of God in general, as well as how to work together in a synodal and missionary Church.
The second week of the Synod of Bishops focused on key issues related to dialogue and the missionary identity of the Church, with discussions emphasizing prayer and listening. A central concern was the role of women, as well as the inclusion of marginalized communities such as LGBTQ+ faithful. Although controversial topics like women's ordination and blessings for same-sex couples were discussed in separate study groups, the broader focus remained on promoting a more synodal Church based on listening and discernment.
