The Michigan Catholic Conference and Archbishop Vigneron have responded to a social media video featuring Governor Gretchen Whitmer. The video, which was posted on Instagram, has caused controversy among the Catholic community in Michigan.

Archbishop Vigneron emphasized the role of the Michigan Catholic Conference as "the official voice of the Catholic Church in Michigan on matters of public policy." He expressed gratitude for their response to the video and highlighted the importance of engaging with elected officials in a manner that reflects Christian values. "Let us pray for our governor," he stated, urging a commitment to religious liberty and respect for all faiths.

The Michigan Catholic Conference expressed disappointment over the content of the video. The skit depicted Governor Whitmer placing a Dorito chip on a woman's tongue, mimicking the act of receiving Communion. Paul A. Long, President and CEO of the conference, described it as "an all-too-familiar example of an elected official mocking religious persons and their practices."

Long acknowledged dialogue with the governor's office but stressed that regardless of intent, the impact was offensive. He called for a return to civility and respect toward people of faith in public discourse, noting that "Michigan is a religiously diverse state" with communities from various faiths.

The incident has sparked discussions about respect for religious practices and how they are portrayed by public figures.
