Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., D.D. Archbishop | Archdiocese of Newark website
Cardinal Joseph Tobin of the Archdiocese of Newark has shared a video message with the faithful as he prepares to attend the second and final session of the Synod on Synodality in Rome. This session is set to begin on Sunday, September 29, 2024. Throughout October, Cardinal Tobin will provide weekly video updates from this global gathering of bishops, clergy, and laypeople.
In his message, Cardinal Tobin expressed his well-wishes: "La paz sea con ustedes, sus familias y sus comunidades de fe." He highlighted the involvement of Newark's faithful since Pope Francis convened the Synod in October 2021. "Nos unimos a los católicos de todo el mundo en la escucha orante del Espíritu Santo," he said, emphasizing that their contributions enriched the first session held last October.
The central theme of the Synod 2021-2024 is “Por una Iglesia Sinodal: comunión, participación y misión,” which calls for joy and renewal among God's people. Cardinal Tobin noted that this call is based on a common baptismal identity and unity in God. "Es una llamada a todos los bautizados, sin excepción," he stated.
Cardinal Tobin outlined expectations for the upcoming four weeks: "Preveo un mayor profundizamiento de la comprensión compartida de la forma de ser Iglesia llamada sinodalidad," including potential changes in canon law and an invitation for the Church to undertake conversion and reform.
Reflecting on his tenure since January 2017, Cardinal Tobin mentioned unique opportunities to listen over the summer and early fall. He met with around sixty people from across the Archdiocese who shared their hopes for the future. Additionally, he engaged with auxiliary bishops and colleagues at Newark's Pastoral Center and spent time praying with 413 priests earlier this week.
He assured that more updates would follow: "Al igual que el año pasado, grabaré un video sobre el Sínodo cada semana para mantenerles informados de lo que está ocurriendo en Roma." Upon returning to New Jersey, he plans to share insights for making the Archdiocese a more faithful witness to Jesus and His Kingdom.
Cardinal Tobin concluded by asking for prayers: "Les pido que recen por todos los miembros del Sínodo para que nuestros corazones estén abiertos al Espíritu Santo."
