On July 8, the Juan Diego Route of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage made six stops across Louisville, Kentucky, including three Eucharistic processions. Participants ranged from youth to the elderly, with many families and strollers noted by Shayla Elm, a pilgrim traveling from Texas to Indianapolis on the southern route of the nationwide pilgrimage. Three other groups of pilgrims will join them in Indianapolis next week.
Among the worshipers in Louisville was 7-year-old Azalie Cain, who participated in a one-mile procession from St. Francis of Assisi Church to St. James Church with her family. Azalie shared her knowledge about Jesus: “He died on the cross. He rose from the dead. He was born in a stable. He was the son of God.” She added that she hoped the pilgrimage would show people that they are Catholic.
Felicity Carrico, age 12, expressed excitement about participating in the pilgrimage. “I thought it was cool that it came to our parish [Our Lady and St. John],” she said, noting that she found the procession moving and inspiring due to its public nature. Felicity hopes it will spark curiosity among onlookers and strengthen participants' faith.
Seven-year-old Dominic Osting also took part in a one-mile procession from St. James to the Shrine of St. Martin of Tours later on July 8 with his family. Preparing for his First Holy Communion this year, Dominic said he was excited to “see Jesus” in the procession.
Families have been encouraged to participate in the National Eucharistic Congress taking place July 17-21 in Indianapolis, which is the final destination of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage. The congress will offer special activities for families, including toddler play areas and discounted food options.
