In the latest development regarding the ongoing Synod on Synodality initiated by Pope Francis, the Archdiocese of Louisville has published a new synod report based on feedback gathered from local listening sessions. The report, titled “ ‘Journeying Together’ The Archdiocesan Synthesis II Interim Phase,” compiles reflections on various aspects of the church, including hope, leadership, inclusion, and engagement.

According to Richard “Tink” Guthrie, who coordinates the local synod process, the sessions attracted over 100 "deeply engaged" Catholics from 28 parishes and three religious orders. Guthrie noted that while the recent sessions were not as extensive as the previous ones in 2022, the feedback received was consistent with previous input.

Participants shared their perspectives on the church, with one individual emphasizing the importance of embodying God's love and becoming ambassadors of that love. Another participant expressed hope that the Synod would guide the church in its evangelization efforts and decision-making processes.

Discussions during the sessions also touched on leadership styles within the church, with one participant advocating for more inclusive, humble, and respectful approaches to leadership. Additionally, the topic of inclusion was highlighted, with participants stressing the need for a more welcoming environment within the church for marginalized groups.

Regarding engagement, participants raised concerns about declining involvement in the church and suggested initiatives to increase participation, such as outreach programs for marginalized individuals. The report also acknowledged tensions between different viewpoints within the church, emphasizing the importance of respectful dialogue and understanding diverse perspectives.

Guthrie emphasized that the synodal process is a form of leadership planning and discussion, aimed at better understanding the needs and perspectives of the Catholic community. He highlighted the significance of synodal listening in fostering mutual understanding and bridging divides within the church.

The latest report has been forwarded to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops for further review and will contribute to a North American report for the Holy See. Reports from different continents will inform the upcoming gathering of the Synod on Synodality in October 2024.
