Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville

Angelo Centeno, a senior at St. Xavier High School, is preparing to enter the Catholic Church this Easter in pursuit of his vocational call to join the Xaverian Brothers. Expressing his long-held desire, Centeno stated, "I always knew I wanted to be Catholic. It was just a matter of when and how."

With excitement and gratitude, Centeno shared, "I’m so overjoyed that it’s official. I’m in disbelief." He sees this milestone as "a new chapter in my life."

Reflecting on the gifts he has received, Centeno pondered, "How can I give these gifts back to the world?" His passion for service stems from a deep-rooted desire to help others, instilled in him by his grandmother.

Centeno's determination to serve was further solidified after a retreat and a conversation with a brother serving in Africa. He expressed, "That’s when I knew I was going to become a brother and that I was going to Africa."

Inspirational and hopeful about his vocation, Centeno remarked, “It’s a sign that God is always working and that religious life is still alive. I’m hoping my vocation will show young men and women that this is something you can still do.”

M. Annette Mandley-Turner, who serves as Centeno's confirmation sponsor, commended him, stating, "This kid is special." She recognized the depth of his faith and the profound relationship he holds with God.

Following his graduation, Centeno plans to travel to Bungoma, Kenya, to immerse himself in the culture and language while serving at a high school run by the Xaverian Brothers. His journey will continue as he pursues theology studies at Thomas More University in Kentucky.

Centeno's story serves as an inspiration to many, showcasing a deep commitment to faith and service that resonates with those around him.
