Bishop Thomas John Paprocki | Diocese of Springfield

Father Richard Chiola, a priest of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois, and Springfield Dominican Sister Sharon Zayac, OP, have recently collaborated on a new book titled "Science and Christ: a Dialogue." The 226-page book delves into the intersection of traditional teachings about Jesus Christ with scientific concepts such as the Big Bang, human evolution, environmental concerns, and the future of the universe. The project was dedicated in memory of Sister Ann Regina Baker, OP, who initially suggested the collaboration between Father Chiola and Sister Zayac.

Father Chiola, with over 50 years of experience studying and teaching theology, and Sister Sharon Zayac, who has dedicated 30 years to studying and teaching cosmology, bring a wealth of knowledge to the discussion. The book has received praise for its comprehensive and well-researched approach to Christian cosmology. Father Donald Goergen, OP, commended the authors for creating a work that builds essential bridges between science and theology, with significant implications for the future.

In their book, Father Chiola and Sister Sharon explore how cosmologists and theologians view concepts like the Big Bang, emphasizing that cosmic evolution finds its fulfillment in Christ. Father Chiola highlighted the evolving nature of cosmology over the past 50 years, noting that the book aims to help readers understand how cosmology and religious faith can complement each other.

Sister Sharon emphasized the importance of integrating new scientific discoveries into theological frameworks, stating, "The new cosmology can help unwrap for us the meaning of Jesus the Christ in our present day." Sister Barbara Reid, OP, the president of Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, praised the collaboration between scientists and theologians in the book, calling it a "must-read" that offers a clear and valuable contribution to understanding the intersection of science and religion.

"Science and Christ: A Dialogue" is now available for purchase on Amazon in Kindle, paperback, and hardcover formats. For those interested in obtaining a paperback copy for $18, Father Chiola can be contacted via email at rchiola@dio.org.
