Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
Participants in the "Leading Like Jesus" program, offered by the Office of Hispanic Ministry in the Archdiocese of Louisville, are finding inspiration in developing leadership qualities demonstrated by Christ. Griselda Matehuala, a program participant, shared her experience, stating, “He gave himself to all... He didn’t think so much for himself but for the neighbor. That is a huge lesson.”
Eva Gonzalez, the director of Hispanic Ministry, highlighted the unique approach of the program, saying, “Usually in leadership programs, you gain some learning on sacraments, sacred Scripture, morality. This is totally based on becoming a leader... what you need to teach others.” Participants delve into Scripture and papal documents like “Fratelli Tutti,” “Evangelium Gaudium,” and “Laudato Si’” to reflect on their own leadership skills.
Alex Huerta, a participant from St. Joseph Church, shared, “I feel like we have learned a lot of spirituality and to get rid of egocentricity... It is teaching us a way to follow Jesus.” Estella Avalos, another participant from St. Rita Church, emphasized the importance of humility and guidance from the Holy Spirit in leadership, stating, “The Spirit of God is the one who guides us... To listen is a way to serve the people — to not judge people and to listen to the people.”
Avalos also highlighted the program's emphasis on serving others while maintaining balance in personal life, noting, “To be a leader like Jesus is not just inside the church... It is with family and friends. It starts in the family.” The program aims to instill the values of selflessness, humility, and service both within and outside the church community.
