The Archdiocese of Newark has released its schedule for Holy Week, a time of deep religious significance for Catholics. As reported by the Archdiocese of Newark, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., Archbishop of Newark, will preside over various liturgies throughout the week leading up to Easter Sunday.

On Palm Sunday, Cardinal Tobin will lead the noon Mass at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Verona, where Catholics will commemorate Jesus' triumphant arrival in Jerusalem. The Mass will include the distribution of blessed palm fronds, symbolizing the palm branches scattered before Jesus.

The Chrism Mass, scheduled for March 25 at Newark’s Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, will witness the blessing of holy oils used in sacraments throughout the year. This Mass also involves clergy renewing their ordination promises and welcoming those involved in church ministries.

Holy Thursday will see Cardinal Tobin presiding over the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, where he will wash the feet of parish representatives in imitation of Jesus. The following day, Good Friday, will feature a solemn liturgy commemorating Christ's suffering and death, including Adoration of the Cross and a choral adaptation of the Stations of the Cross.

The Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday will be a bilingual celebration led by Cardinal Tobin at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, marking the first celebration of Jesus' Resurrection. New members of the Catholic Church will be welcomed and receive sacraments during this significant liturgy.

Finally, Easter Sunday will be observed with Masses in both English and Spanish, culminating in Cardinal Tobin's own Easter Sunday liturgy at noon. The Archdiocese of Newark emphasizes that while each liturgy commemorates the miracle of Christ's Resurrection, Catholics are not obliged to attend both.

All Holy Week liturgies at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart will be live-streamed for those unable to attend in person. The Archdiocese of Newark encourages individuals to visit their website for more information on the various services and activities offered throughout the week.
