In a recent statement, Bishop Robert J. Brennan of the United States expressed his concern over the Biden Administration's actions to rescind regulations aimed at protecting the life of the unborn. The President's executive order overturned the Mexico City and the Promoting Life in Global Health policy, which previously prevented U.S. taxpayer dollars from funding abortions overseas. Additionally, the Administration has opened the Title X family planning program to the provision and promotion of abortion and is considering codifying the Roe v. Wade decision.
Bishop Brennan emphasized the importance of the right to life, stating that it is the preeminent human right, the first among all others. He stressed that if the right to life is not protected, no other human right can be secure. While the Catholic Church supports humanitarian assistance programs that aid families and promote human development, Bishop Brennan maintained that it is morally imperative for these programs to protect human life from conception to natural death.
"Abortion is at odds with genuine love and concern for our neighbors in need," Bishop Brennan stated. He expressed the hope that President Biden would have a change of heart and take actions to protect all human life.
The bishop also highlighted the need for a faithful and living witness to the wonder and beauty of human life at every stage and in every condition. He stressed that the ultimate victory for life will not be achieved solely through political means, such as the White House, Congress, or the Supreme Court. Rather, it is when the right to life is held sacred in the hearts of the people that it will be fully protected and endure. Bishop Brennan called for efforts to build a culture of life.
The Catholic Church has been a vocal advocate for the protection of unborn life and opposes policies that promote abortion. Bishop Brennan's statement reflects the concerns of many within the Church who believe that the Biden Administration's actions undermine the sanctity of life.
As the debate over abortion and family planning policies continues, it remains to be seen how the Biden Administration will respond to the concerns raised by Bishop Brennan and others who share his views.
