In a recent ceremony held by the Office of Youth Ministry in the Diocese of Tucson, 87 exceptional teenagers were acknowledged for their commitment to discipleship. The annual Youth Awards, which took place in Tucson and Yuma, recognized students in three distinct categories: Missionary Disciples, Missionaries of Mercy, and Liturgical Leaders.
The Missionary Disciples category honored teenagers who serve as catechists, leaders, or mentors, actively sharing their faith within the community. These young individuals serve as witnesses of the Gospel, guiding others towards knowledge and love for Christ through their words and actions. They are truly igniting the faith of those around them.
The Missionaries of Mercy award was bestowed upon teens who display exceptional dedication and passion in their acts of service. These individuals exemplify the Church's Social Teachings and lead by example, always going the extra mile to serve those in need. Their mission is to bring dignity, hope, love, and compassion to the vulnerable and outcast, inspiring others to join their noble cause.
The Liturgical Leaders category recognized teenagers who serve in various liturgical roles, such as altar servers, cantors, lectors, and sacristans. When youth confidently and prayerfully step into these roles, the community pays closer attention and engages more deeply. Their love and reverence for the Church's sacraments, especially during Mass, are truly commendable.
Bishop Edward Weisenburger presided over the Masses in Yuma and Tucson, which were concelebrated by priests from throughout the diocese. It was a momentous occasion for the 87 students, aged between 14 and 17, who received these prestigious awards. Four Catholic high schools and 24 parishes nominated these outstanding teens, highlighting their exemplary dedication and contribution to the community.
During the ceremony, each student was presented with the shepherd's cross of Pope Francis, symbolizing their commitment to discipleship and their role as leaders within the Church. Fr. Manu Gomez-Franco, O.Carm., who leads the youth ministry for the diocese, expressed his gratitude and admiration for the young recipients, stating, "The energy and talents of young people secure for us a Church that has not ceased her mission in the crossroads of history. Our youth are a sign to us that God blesses his people with new disciples, generation after generation."
Looking ahead, on Saturday, February 17, the youth from the diocese will participate in a one-day Lenten retreat. This retreat aims to deepen their faith and help them discover the path to sainthood. The diocese recognizes the importance of nurturing the spiritual growth of its young members and is committed to providing them with opportunities to deepen their relationship with God.
The Diocese of Tucson is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of these 87 teens who have shown exceptional dedication to their faith and service to the community. Their passion and commitment serve as an inspiration for others to follow in their footsteps.
