On the occasion of the feast of St. Francis de Sales, the principal patron of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Archbishop Dennis M. Schnurr has written a letter to the faithful emphasizing the significance of leadership in the parishes.

St. Francis de Sales, a bishop and renowned confessor and spiritual guide, has inspired countless individuals over the past 400 years to walk the path of holiness. In his letter, Archbishop Schnurr calls upon the faithful to consider how they can also lead people to Christ in their time and place.

The letter focuses on the Beacons of Light initiative, a process of pastoral planning aimed at effectively utilizing the resources of the archdiocese to proclaim the Gospel and make disciples. The leadership principle of Beacons of Light states that pastors, in collaboration with parochial vicars, deacons, and lay ministers, share responsibility for pastoral leadership.

"The spiritual, physical, and mental health and ongoing support of ordained and lay leaders is vital for Families of Parishes," Archbishop Schnurr writes.

The decisions regarding resource allocation will be made locally, specific to the circumstances and opportunities within each Family of Parishes. The importance of leadership in this process cannot be overstated. Family Leadership Teams have already been formed, key staff members have been designated or are being hired, and leadership training has been provided. However, this is just the beginning.

"There is an ongoing need for priests, deacons, and lay leaders to grow in skill and collaboration to discern the best steps toward missionary discipleship in their respective Families," states the Archbishop.

The recent Parish Vitality survey highlighted the importance of leadership in the future of the parishes. The Archbishop urges the faithful to pray for all leaders – priests, deacons, and lay leaders – in the archdiocese, that they may effectively encourage others to radiate the love of Christ to all.

In conclusion, Archbishop Schnurr expresses his gratitude to all those who serve the mission of the Church through their parish and Family of Parishes. He wishes them God's blessings as they continue their holy work.

"Sincerely yours in Christ," he signs off.

The letter serves as a reminder of the crucial role that leadership plays in the growth and vitality of parishes. It calls upon the faithful to actively participate in the Beacons of Light initiative and to support their leaders through prayer and collaboration. By following the examples set by St. Francis de Sales and other saints, the faithful can continue to lead people to Christ and foster the love of God in their communities.
