The Archdiocese of Chicago and the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago are convening a prayer service on Oct. 22 to show support for protecting the environment and preserving it from the damages of climate change.
The event is being held during the seventh annual Vespers for the Care of Creation at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Glenview.
“This annual gathering is an important time for Christians to come together and pray for God’s wonderful gift of creation. Pope Francis, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, and other religious leaders are urging us to take decisive action to combat climate change and we must do our part to raise awareness about the impact of global warming on all of creation," Cardinal Blase Cupich, archbishop of Chicago, said, according to the Archdiocese of Chicago.
The ecumenical event will be at 7 p.m. and is aimed at people of all faiths who are concerned with the decay of the environment.
The prayer service will also be streamed on the church’s website for those who are unable to attend in person.
Catholic social teaching holds stewardship of the earth as one of the seven key tenets, making it a moral requirement for Catholics, according to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.
