The Eagles basketball team from Villa Marie School for Exceptional Children in Waverly clinched their school’s fourth consecutive state title at the Special Olympics Nebraska Spring Games basketball tournament held on April 7. Despite facing tough competition, the Eagles emerged victorious in a challenging tournament.

Head coach Matt Jilek reflected on the formidable opponents they faced, stating, "The expression ‘they may be giants’ was not an exaggeration when we looked at the other teams we were about to play." Coach Greg Gibney emphasized the team's preparation for tough challenges, likening their experience to the David and Goliath sports metaphor.

The Eagles, who practice in the school's garage due to the absence of a gymnasium, demonstrated their dedication and teamwork throughout the season. Jilek praised the school for nurturing coachable, respectful, and supportive individuals, saying, “Villa Marie is developing children that are coachable, respectful, and great teammates to each other.”

In a thrilling final game against Scottsbluff’s Thunder, the Eagles showcased their resilience and determination. Gibney expressed confidence in the team, stating, “We knew our players were up for the challenge in the second half. We have conditioned them to be in this very spot in our practices.” The Eagles secured a hard-fought victory with a final score of 22-16.

Jilek expressed gratitude towards those who have supported the team, particularly acknowledging the Knights of Columbus for their contributions. He highlighted the joy experienced by the players when receiving new athletic gear, stating, “You would not believe the smiles of pure joy when they receive their new shoes.”

The triumph of the Eagles in the Special Olympics Nebraska Spring Games exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance instilled at Villa Marie School for Exceptional Children.
