Franciscan University of Steubenville has been chosen as one of ten collegiate programs to join the inaugural New York Jets-sponsored Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women’s Flag Football League, set to begin in spring 2026. The selection comes after the university's women's club flag football team had a strong debut season and gained national attention.
The women’s flag football program at Franciscan was established in 2024 and is led by head coach Connor Arlia, a former West Virginia University wide receiver and Arena Football League player. In its first year, the team achieved a 6–1 record, with wins over the University of Pittsburgh and several teams from the Presidents’ Athletic Conference. In October, Franciscan was among four programs invited to play at Acrisure Stadium during halftime of an NFL game between the Steelers and Browns.
The Barons have also built a reputation for their community spirit and commitment to the Catholic faith, reflecting Franciscan University's broader mission.
“When the Jets and ECAC invited us to participate in the new league, we enthusiastically embraced the opportunity,” said Danny Andersen, Franciscan University athletic director. “It’s a chance for our team to compete at a high level against schools outside the region and truly advance the mission of the University. Our flag football program is already known for its faith, passion, and excellence on and off the field.”
The creation of this league is supported by a $1 million grant from the Betty Wold Johnson Foundation. It will be the largest collegiate women’s flag football league in the United States. The competition will use a 7-on-7 format. Events include Media Day and a USA Football Talent ID Camp at MetLife Stadium in February, regular-season games from February through April, and a championship event at MetLife Stadium during the first weekend in May.
