Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen has issued an executive order to stop the use of state Medicaid funds for abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood. The decision will redirect funding to health care providers that do not perform abortions.
State officials cited issues at Nebraska Planned Parenthood centers, referencing local media reports of problems such as errors in HIV and syphilis testing. A national investigation by The New York Times also reported concerns about care quality and facility conditions at Planned Parenthood locations across the country, while noting increases in both abortions performed and taxpayer funding received by the organization.
The move follows a June ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, which allows states to halt Medicaid funding for abortion providers. In July, President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, removing federal funding from major abortion organizations for one year.
Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of SBA Pro-Life America, said:
The executive order is part of Pillen’s broader efforts related to abortion policy in Nebraska. Since May 2023, Nebraska law has restricted most abortions after the first trimester. Last November, voters approved a constitutional amendment supporting these protections. Pillen has also signed legislation offering tax credits for pregnancy centers that provide support services such as ultrasounds and baby supplies. Additionally, he extended Nebraska’s Safe Haven law to allow newborns to be surrendered at more locations and for a longer period after birth.
Governor Pillen joins Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt in taking similar action since the Medina decision.
