A doctoral student from St. John’s University’s College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences has received national recognition for her research in pulmonary drug delivery. Mural Quadros, who is pursuing a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a focus on industrial pharmacy, was honored at the Workshop for Inhalation Products and Pulmonary Drug Delivery held at Purdue University in Indiana from September 29 to October 1.

Quadros received both the Best Poster Award and the Best Three-Minute Thesis Award during the annual event, which gathers researchers from academia, industry, and regulatory agencies to discuss recent developments in inhalation science and therapy.

Her research addresses lung cancer treatment by delivering medication directly to the lungs. This method aims to provide quicker results, achieve higher drug concentrations at the disease site, and reduce side effects compared to conventional therapies. Vivek Gupta, Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Quadros’s mentor, highlighted how her work supports the goals of his laboratory.

Reflecting on her experience at the workshop, Quadros said: “Interacting with leading scientists and professionals with deep expertise in inhalation science provided constructive feedback and new perspectives to strengthen my research. Being recognized with these two awards is truly humbling. I am grateful to St. John’s and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences for fostering a supportive environment that encourages innovation, collaboration, and research excellence.”

As she approaches completion of her doctorate, Quadros plans to continue working on formulation and drug delivery development within the pharmaceutical industry with an aim to improve patient outcomes.
