Most Reverend Nelson J. Pérez, Archbishop of Philadelphia, issued a statement expressing his support and congratulations following the appointment of Bishop James F. Checchio as the Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans by Pope Leo XIV.
"I was filled with great joy to learn that Pope Leo XIV appointed Most Reverend James F. Checchio as the Coadjutor Archbishop of New Orleans," said Archbishop Pérez.
He noted Bishop Checchio’s service as a priest in the Diocese of Camden and as shepherd of the Diocese of Metuchen. According to Pérez, Checchio has demonstrated dedication to pastoral care and church administration, highlighting his academic background which includes a doctoral degree in Canon Law from Rome and an M.B.A. from La Salle University, along with experience as Rector at the North American College in Rome.
Archbishop Pérez also mentioned Checchio's expertise in communications: "His expertise in the field of communications especially will serve the Archdiocese of New Orleans well, as he joins Archbishop Gregory M. Aymond in sharing the Good News of the compassionate love of Jesus Christ with all whom he encounters."
Pérez concluded by extending congratulations on behalf of clergy and laity in Philadelphia: "In the name of the priests, deacons, consecrated religious, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, I offer heartfelt congratulations and prayers to Bishop Checchio as he prepares to assume his new role in service to the Church. May the Holy Spirit continue to grace him with wisdom, strength, and apostolic zeal."
