Four individuals were recognized for their work in the pro-life movement at the 2025 People of Life awards, held during the Diocesan Pro-Life Leadership Conference in Arlington, Virginia. The honorees this year included Valerie Washington, Judy Haag, and the late Rita and Mike Marker. The awards dinner was attended by about 100 diocesan Catholic pro-life leaders and guests. Bishop Daniel E. Thomas of Toledo, chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, and Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of Arlington were present at the event.

The People of Life award is given to Catholics who have shown dedication to pro-life activities and respect for human dignity as outlined by Saint John Paul II in The Gospel of Life (Evangelium vitae, 1995). The award honors significant and longstanding contributions to promoting a culture that values life.

Valerie Washington has served as Executive Director of the National Black Catholic Congress (NBCC) for 25 years. She has guided its mission and programs while supporting justice, evangelization, and pro-life efforts within the Church. Under her leadership, NBCC organized national congresses that brought together thousands of Black Catholics to celebrate faith and address challenges facing their community.

Judy Haag has worked as a long-term care nurse for three decades while also advocating for pro-life causes. She chaired the New Ulm Diocesan Council of Catholic Women Reverence for Life Committee, helped educate others about abortion issues, co-chaired her local 40 Days for Life campaign since it began over 15 years ago, led parish observances related to Roe v. Wade’s anniversary each January 22nd, and facilitated participation in Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life’s March for Life events. Haag has also mentored youth at her parish on Catholic Social Teaching.

Bishop Daniel E. Thomas said: "The People of Life Award celebrates those whose lives are marked by extraordinary witness to Christ’s love through tireless service on behalf of vulnerable persons—especially unborn children—and their mothers."

Bishop Michael F. Burbidge stated: "Tonight we honor those who have responded generously to God’s call with courage and perseverance."

The late Rita and Mike Marker were also honored posthumously for their contributions.
