MELBOURNE - Ascension Parish has set up a Flags for Heroes display, honoring 162 individuals for their service and dedication to others. This initiative, organized by the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Martin B. Power Council 14573, marks its second year on the parish campus.

Grand Knight José Montes explained that the event is not just a fundraiser but a way to connect with patriotism by dedicating a United States flag to personal heroes. "Flags for Heroes connects with the concept of patriotism by dedicating a United States flag to a personal hero and displaying that flag for over a week surrounding the 4th of July," he said.

The display allows people to sponsor their heroes, regardless of whether they are Catholic or not, veterans or not. David AmRhein coordinated the event and emphasized the theme of service: “There’s one common denominator among them and that is service – service to family, service to country, and most importantly service to God.”

Wayne Hosburgh sponsored his sister Susan Spillers, acknowledging her contributions as a local teacher working primarily with children with disabilities. "I love the way she interacted with the children in the school," he noted.

Geraldine Blanchard honored Father Eamon Tobin, former pastor of Ascension Parish who passed away in 2021. She remembered him as someone who rekindled her faith after moving from Oman: “He had such a soothing effect for me after many years in the Middle East."

Renee Jurgensen paid tribute to her late husband Paul and son Scott through this initiative. Her emotional letter invited Scott to attend without knowing he would be honored.

Gunnery Sergeant Jonathan Gifford was recognized posthumously by his brother Matthew as an exemplary Marine: “He is the only U.S. Marine to have a street in Arlington National Cemetery named after him.” Gifford lost his life during his last tour in Afghanistan.

The Flags for Heroes display stands until July 6 at Ascension Parish, celebrating those who have served across various vocations while supporting charitable causes through proceeds.
