The Diocese of Columbus has announced a significant change in its religious education policy, specifically concerning the sacrament of Confirmation. Bishop Earl K. Fernandes has decided to lower the age at which children receive Confirmation to nine or ten years old, typically corresponding to fourth grade.
This decision follows extensive consultations and deliberations over the past two years. Bishop Fernandes expressed concern about children leaving the Catholic faith at an early age and emphasized the importance of catechetical formation for families and young members of the Church. He stated, "A primary reason for my inquiry was the urgency to address the catechetical needs of our children at an earlier age."
To explore this possibility, a Diocesan Committee was formed, including representatives from various church offices and priests from the Diocese of Columbus. The committee's findings supported lowering the age for Confirmation, leading to further discussions with parish and school personnel across the Diocese. This focus group also showed strong support for the proposal.
Bishop Fernandes acknowledged that some might question why not adopt a Restored Order process where Confirmation precedes First Communion. However, he noted that such a transition would be challenging for the Diocese at this time but remains open for future consideration.
The new policy will require several phases of pastoral, liturgical, and catechetical transition over four years starting in fall 2025. The Office of Evangelization and Catechesis will collaborate with other diocesan offices to provide training and formation for parish staff and educators.
Bishop Fernandes concluded by thanking those involved in preparing for this change: "Thank you for all your evangelization and catechetical efforts in catechizing our families and young people."
