Reverend Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. Bishop | Archdiocese of Louisville
The Record is expanding its Spanish-language coverage through digital platforms, with the introduction of an email newsletter and bilingual social media posts. The newspaper's last print edition featuring Vida Católica will be on June 26. Vida Católica, a monthly section in Spanish initiated in 2018, will continue to be available online at theRecordnewspaper.org.
Marnie McAllister, editor of The Record, stated that this change aims to reach Spanish-speaking Catholics more effectively. For seven years, printed editions with Vida Católica were distributed to over a dozen parishes offering Mass in Spanish. However, according to McAllister, pastors have reported declining usage of these print copies.
Conversely, the email newsletter launched last fall has been well received and "apparently reaching more households than the print editions," said McAllister. Eva Gonzalez, director of Hispanic ministry for the Archdiocese of Louisville, noted that Spanish-speaking Catholics prefer using smartphones for communication. She emphasized that The Record's website and bilingual social media content are easily accessible by phone.
The monthly Spanish-language newsletter includes local news and events from the Archdiocese of Louisville as well as national and international news. It provides links for reading coverage in English too.
For over two decades, The Record has offered Spanish translations of columns written by the Archbishops of Louisville. These translations will continue alongside their English counterparts in print.
