Governor Greg Abbott has signed the Texas Med Ed bill, aimed at safeguarding pregnant women from misinformation regarding abortion. The legislation was passed unanimously in the Senate and received only six opposing votes in the House. This bipartisan bill mandates ongoing education for medical and legal professionals about providing emergency care to pregnant women under Texas' pro-life law.
Texas joins a few states that have enacted similar measures. South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem was the first to sign a Med Ed bill into law in 2024. North Dakota Governor Kelly Armstrong followed with a similar measure in April, and Kentucky also passed legislation this year clarifying that women can receive medical care under its pro-life law. Florida has taken comparable steps through administrative actions.
Following the signing of the bill, Governor Abbott stated that Texas is leading on life issues:
Sue Liebel, state affairs director for SBA Pro-Life America, expressed her support for what she termed a victory for Texas mothers:
Ingrid Skop, M.D., FACOG, vice president and director of medical affairs for Charlotte Lozier Institute and practicing OB-GYN in Texas, commented:
Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America is an organization comprising over one million pro-life Americans nationwide. It focuses on ending abortion by electing national leaders and advocating for life-saving laws while promoting pro-life women leaders.
