Father William Burns, a priest from Orlando, received a chalice as a gift from Deacon Ron and Ann L’Huillier in memory of his late mother, Lorraine. The chalice holds significant meaning for Father Burns due to its intricate symbolism.
During a visit to the seminary, Father Burns and his daughter Sarah went to a silversmith in Massachusetts, where his mother had lived. The chalice's base features symbols representing the Gospel evangelists: an angel or winged man for Matthew, a lion for Mark, an ox for Luke, and an eagle for John. These figures symbolize the Word of God.
"The chalice really drew me because of the symbolism on it," said Father Burns. He explained that these symbols represent "the basis of our faith." The upper section of the chalice represents the 12 apostles, described by Father Burns as "foundational to our faith." The bottom of the matching paten also depicts images of the 12 apostles.
