Bishop Thomas John Paprocki | Diocese of Springfield

On May 24, at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Bishop Thomas John Paprocki ordained two new priests, Father Charles "Charlie" Delano and Father Ryan Kehoe, for the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois. The ceremony was attended by many priests, deacons, family members, and friends who gathered to witness the ordination and express gratitude.

Father Brian Alford, Vicar for Clergy, Consecrated Life and Vocations, remarked on the significance of this event. "It is an exciting time for these two men to be entering into priestly ministry for our diocese," he said. He noted that with more people exploring the Catholic faith, especially younger individuals, there are increased opportunities to share their faith.

Father Alford also expressed optimism about a resurgence in the Catholic Church following the election of North America's first pope. He emphasized that both newly ordained priests are eager to serve their parishes and contribute generously to the diocese.

Father Delano shared his journey towards priesthood began during college at adoration sessions. "It was while I was in college at the Newman Center...that I felt God pulling at my heart," he stated. His excitement lies in celebrating Mass and ministering to people.

Similarly, Father Kehoe recalled a pivotal moment during adoration at Blessed Sacrament in Springfield when he envisioned himself as a priest. "At that moment, grace just broke in," he recounted. He hopes his vocation will help others experience God's love.

Bishop Paprocki highlighted the role of strong parish communities in fostering religious vocations. "I note that both of our ordinandi this year were born and raised in our diocese here in Central Illinois," he said. He encouraged all parishes to nurture spiritual atmospheres conducive to discerning vocations.

Starting July 1st, Father Delano will serve as parochial vicar at Holy Family Parish and chaplain for St. Teresa High School in Decatur. Meanwhile, Father Kehoe will begin his duties as parochial vicar at Blessed Sacrament Parish in Springfield—the same place where his calling began.
