Father Phillip Mills was preparing for Mass at St. James Cathedral in Orlando when the announcement of "White smoke! White smoke!" signaled the election of a new pope by the conclave of cardinals in Vatican City. Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, known as Pope Leo XIV, was chosen.

Father Mills expressed joy, saying, “Such an incredible joy that the first thing we were able to do here in this community as a parish family was to gather around the altar.” He emphasized the unity represented by the new pope's election, stating, “His being elected so quickly by all the cardinals shows the unity with the Holy Spirit happening among our leaders.”

Bishop John Noonan shared his excitement: “As we learned of the white smoke, we proclaim Psalm 66, ‘Let all the earth cry out to God with great joy!’ Habemus Papam!” He highlighted Pope Leo XIV’s potential impact due to his background and linguistic skills.

During a press conference on May 8, Bishop Noonan remarked on having an American cardinal become pope as a privilege for those serving in the United States. He noted that Pope Leo XIV might focus on social justice issues like his namesake Pope Leo XIII.

Father Miguel González and Father Ángel García also attended the press conference. Father González commented on Pope Leo XIV’s legacy: “We have someone truly human in his vulnerabilities and brokenness.” Father García emphasized Pope Leo XIV’s understanding of Hispanic culture and his missionary work in Peru.

Parishioners at St. James Parish Hall awaited Pope Leo XIV’s appearance. Liliana Pascuzzi hoped for unity under his leadership. Maria Gueco wished for continued outreach to youth and marginalized communities. Elina Del Rosario found inspiration in having an American pope committed to building bridges within faith communities.

The faithful gathered with anticipation as they looked forward to seeing how Pope Leo XIV would lead and inspire them.
