Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P., President St. John's University-New York | St. John's University-New York
St. John's University recently organized a two-day event in Albany, NY, as part of its Alumni Insider's View program. From April 29 to 30, 33 students had the opportunity to explore political careers and connect with alumni working in the Capital Region.
The program is sponsored by the Office of Alumni Relations and University Career Services and aims to provide networking opportunities with distinguished alumni. This year's trip included an overnight stay for the first time, enhancing the experience for participants.
Students toured the Capitol building during discussions on topics such as state budget and education reform. Brian Browne, Associate Vice President of University Communications and Public Affairs, noted that students learned about career opportunities in state government through interactions with advocates and lobbyists who travel between New York City and Albany.
Isabella Heinzen, a graduate student from California, found inspiration in meeting St. John's alumni involved in public service. She described her experience as "truly inspiring."
The event featured panel discussions with alumni such as State Senators Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick, Jack Martins, Anthony H. Palumbo; Syracuse City Auditor Alexander Marion; Legislative Director Sarah E. Spellman; Senior Advisor Kevin G. Wisniewski; Scheduler Shannon R. Fredericks; Assistant Comptroller Joseph J. Galante; Assemblymember John K. Mikulin; Vice President Gregory Mitchell; Senior Managing Director J. Antonio Quesada; Assemblymember Ed Ra; President Robert Ungar; Cofounder David Weinraub.
Molly Richardson, a junior studying International Management, appreciated the chance to expand her network among influential figures at these sessions.
Blake G. Washington, Budget Director for New York State, discussed highlights from the Fiscal Year 2026 Budget during a session at the Blue Room in the Capitol Building.
Kritika Sharma shared how this experience reshaped her perspective on pursuing a career in public service instead of law school.
On day two, students toured historical sites like the New York State Capitol and met with Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli to learn about various career opportunities within his office.
David Weinraub hosted a lunch at Brown & Weinraub PLLC's office where he encouraged students to leverage their St. John's education and network for future success.
"Weinraub emphasized,"You're all family," highlighting both their degree value alongside connections made through university ties."
This educational trip was made possible through support from St John's supporters who generously contributed towards its success.
