The School of Education at St. John’s University held its annual SOE Awards Ceremony on May 1 at Taffner Field House in Queens, NY. The event recognized outstanding graduating students for their achievements and contributions to the field of education.
Katherine Czado Aquino, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Innovation and Partnership at The School of Education, welcomed attendees by emphasizing the significance of the ceremony. “This ceremony is more than a collection of awards—it is a tribute to the journey each of you has taken,” she stated. Dr. Aquino highlighted the dedication and resilience required in their educational pursuits.
The ceremony celebrated both undergraduate and graduate students who are set to embark on various professional paths. Dr. Aquino remarked, “Some of you may become classroom teachers, school counselors, administrators, researchers, policymakers, or advocates.” She noted that despite diverse career trajectories, they share a common belief in the transformative power of education.
Saidy López, a student speaker from Long Island, NY, shared her personal journey to St. John’s University after her previous institution closed unexpectedly. “Stepping into the undergraduate office at St. John’s for the first time, I immediately felt a sense of peace,” López recounted. She expressed gratitude towards The School of Education for providing her with support and a renewed purpose as an educator.
Awards were distributed to students from four departments within SOE: Department of Administrative and Instructional Leadership, Department of Counselor Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and Department of Education Specialties.
In closing remarks, Dr. Aquino acknowledged the families and friends present at the ceremony for their ongoing support. “To our families, friends, and partners—thank you for being here today and for the unwavering support you give these incredible individuals,” she said.
