Supporting pregnant mothers extends beyond providing essential items, says Dana Hughes of St. Patrick Church. “We’ve helped anywhere from standing in line at the DMV with them to renew their expired tags to baby showers to helping with flat tires,” she explained.

Hughes leads St. Patrick Church’s chapter of "Walking With Moms in Need," a parish-based initiative supporting expecting mothers. This nationwide ministry, which includes eight active groups within the Archdiocese of Louisville, is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year.

In Louisville, expectant mothers are referred to these parish groups by Little Way Pregnancy Resource Center. Parish leaders then contact the mothers and arrange lunch meetings to understand their situations and needs better. Resources are organized accordingly, and support continues weekly.

Hughes emphasized that while they provide extensive local resources, it's the personal connection that truly matters. “We meet them where they’re at, where they are and walk them through their journey, whatever that entails,” she said.

Since 2022, St. Patrick's group has assisted eight mothers with its six regular volunteers. Melissa Cambron, a volunteer, noted that many women served have no support system.

Support varies per individual; it may involve meal assistance for children or help with rent during postpartum recovery. Recently, Hughes shared an instance of aiding a mother concerned about her children during Easter.

The initiative also involves other parishioners through annual online donation requests promoted as a “virtual baby shower.” Items needed include newborn essentials and gift cards.

Initially overwhelmed during training, Hughes found solace in the mission's simplicity: “we’re just there to love them — to be like Jesus for them.” She added that despite challenges, “I’ve done lots of ministries. This one is by far the most rewarding.”

Cambron remarked on stepping out of comfort zones: “It’s real life... We’re called to get out and serve.” The group's connection with mothers continues through meals and updates on their lives.

Hughes concluded by expressing gratitude from those they've assisted: “I have countless thank you cards from these moms… They’re so grateful.” On Mother’s Day, flowers will be sent to both current and past recipients of their aid.
