The Most Rev. Robert J. Brennan, Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn, recently celebrated with 19 members of the St. John’s University community who completed their journey through the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA). This process was formerly known as the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and focuses on welcoming non-Catholics and Catholics who have not received all Sacraments of Initiation as children.

During a Mass held at St. Thomas More Church on the Queens campus, Bishop Brennan expressed his delight in celebrating with those beginning or completing their Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. He remarked, “We are all so incredibly proud of you as you deepen your relationship with the Lord Jesus and his Church.”

Bishop Brennan described the event as “an ecclesial moment—a moment of being Church.” He emphasized that everyone present had encountered the Risen Lord, which brought them together to support one another in their faith journeys.

Reflecting on Pope Francis's recent passing, Bishop Brennan shared words from World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon that he found encouraging for candidates completing their Sacraments. “Pope Francis spoke words that are so encouraging for all of us,” he said.

Emily Florea, a Childhood Education major at St. John’s University, shared her gratitude after completing her final Sacrament of Initiation. She noted feeling whole and blessed to be part of this opportunity at St. John’s.

Raqib Alam, studying Government and Politics, recounted his long-held desire to join the Church since age 15. Reflecting on his baptism experience, he described overcoming doubts about carrying his faith forward.

Carmen Collins, a Multi-Sector Communication doctoral candidate, recounted how an illness in Berlin deepened her connection to Catholicism through care from a Catholic nun during her recovery period. She expressed how joining OCIA allowed her to reconnect with her family’s religion and culture.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone for these individuals as they committed themselves further to their faith within the context of St. John's community.
