Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez | Archdiocese of Philedelphia
The passing of Pope Francis has been met with profound sorrow throughout the Catholic community. Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia expressed his condolences, highlighting the pope's lifelong dedication to the Church. Archbishop Pérez reflected on Pope Francis's 56 years of service, noting his commitment as a Jesuit priest, university professor, Archbishop of Buenos Aires, a cardinal, and finally as Supreme Pontiff.
"Pope Francis will always hold a special place in the heart of the Philadelphia region," remarked the archbishop, recalling the pope's visit to Philadelphia for the World Meeting of Families in 2015. "That moment in time remains a precious gift that will not be forgotten."
The archbishop called attention to Pope Francis's encouragement for Catholics to "be an instrument of Christ’s compassionate love" and for promoting initiatives that champion peace and social justice. Archbishop Pérez praised Pope Francis's call for a synodal process and genuine Christian encounters, urging unity within the faith community.
Plans for a special Mass have been confirmed, with Archbishop Pérez officiating at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul. He has invited all to join in prayer, either in person or via streaming on the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's Vimeo and Facebook platforms.
"From his many apostolic visits around the globe to be among his flock, to his inspiring teachings, to his consistent call for peace and social justice, Pope Francis invited all people to encounter the person of Jesus Christ fully and to serve their brothers and sisters with love and humility as instruments of grace," he stated.
Archbishop Pérez closed his remarks with an invitation for the community to pray for Pope Francis, "May God grant him the gift of eternal life and bring comfort to a Church in mourning."
