Rev. James D. Conley, D.D., S.T.L. | Diocese of Lincoln website
All are invited to attend the Chrism Mass scheduled at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ in Lincoln on April 14 at 5 p.m. The mass will be celebrated by Bishop James Conley, who will bless the three sacred oils—Chrism, the Oil of the Sick, and the Oil of Catechumens—used throughout the diocese.
The Chrism Mass, traditionally held on Holy Thursday, commemorates the establishment of the Church's priesthood and the command of service. It represents the service priests are called to perform and reminds the Church of its responsibility to provide for its members. "The Chrism Mass expresses the service each priest is called to live," the statement read.
In the Diocese of Lincoln, the Chrism Mass is annually observed on Monday of Holy Week to facilitate travel for clergy across the 23,000 square-mile diocese. This scheduling allows priests to return to their parishes for other Holy Week liturgies. "By moving the Mass to Monday, it is easier for the priests of the diocese to travel to Lincoln for the Mass, and then return to their parishes," the report stated.
During the Chrism Mass, diocesan priests will renew the vows made at their ordination. Those celebrating significant anniversaries, known as "jubilees," will receive special recognition at a dinner with their peers. Among this year's jubilarians are Emeritus Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz and Father Patrick O’Byrne, both marking the 65th anniversary of their ordination.
This significant event allows the community to join together in recognition and celebration of their clergy's dedication to service.
