Catholic Social Services of Southern Nebraska (CSS) recently organized its 38th annual “Celebration of Hope” gala and silent auction at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Lincoln on March 15. The gathering attracted more than 450 attendees and marked a significant milestone by introducing a new interactive activity that portrayed the challenges faced by CSS clients.
For the first time in the event's history, attendees participated in a guided activity designed to provide an immersive experience into the lives of CSS clients. “This guided activity was one of the closest ways to give people an opportunity to experience who we work with and what we do every day,” said Katie Patrick, CSS executive director. She described it as a unique chance to understand the challenges and barriers their clients overcome with the help of CSS's Family Support Services program.
Guests engaged in discussions around scenarios that depicted real-life challenges faced by CSS clients, ranging from financial difficulties to personal losses. The organizers shared video testimonies from actual clients and staff, explaining how these situations were managed. Attendees, like Sandy Vandewalle, expressed newfound appreciation for the organization's efforts. “I didn’t realize the extent to what CSS does for its clients,” she stated.
Another participant, Patrick Henry, noted the profound impact of the evening. “Since CSS made this an interactive activity that called for input from everyone at our table, my wife and I left feeling closer to those around us and with everyone in attendance that night,” he said.
In addition to the engaging activity, the Heart of Christ Award was presented to Mike Hosek, honoring his contributions to combating food insecurity through the "Walk to End Hunger initiative." Katie Patrick remarked, “His story is a powerful reminder that changing the world doesn’t always mean doing something on a grand scale.”
Hosek’s efforts have resulted in significant community engagement, with his event raising substantial resources for the CSS Lincoln Food Market. He commented on his motivation by stating, “Through St. Vincent de Paul, I’ve seen firsthand the reality of food insecurity in our own neighborhoods.”
The gala also featured a silent auction with proceeds going towards CSS programs. With significant corporate sponsorships, donations, and auction proceeds, CSS is set to continue its mission in the community. The event underscored the power of service and compassion, showcasing the impact that CSS continues to have on the lives of those they assist.
