The Emmaus Institute for Biblical Studies is set to host a seminar titled “A Biblical Theology of the Body: An Emmaus Seminar” on April 5 at St. Joseph Church in Lincoln. The event will open with Mass at 8 a.m., followed by a light breakfast in Resurrection Hall, catered by Bagels & Joe.

The seminar will focus on the "Theology of the Body," a set of teachings based on St. Pope John Paul II's 129 general audiences from 1979 to 1984. These teachings aim to provide an understanding of life, love, sex, and gender.

Dr. Michael Waldstein, considered a leading English authority on the Theology of the Body, is the featured speaker. He translated these works into English from the original texts and the handwritten notes of St. John Paul II in his book, “Man and Woman He Created Them: A Theology of the Body.”

Father Sean Kilcawley from the Catholic Diocese of Lincoln will also speak. He has taught on the Theology of the Body through various platforms including Word on Fire and the Avila Institute. In July, Father Kilcawley will assume a new role at St. Patrick’s Seminary in Menlo Park, California.

Joshua Burks, an associate teacher at the Emmaus Institute, expressed anticipation for hosting the event, stating, “Many quickly assume that John Paul II’s Theology of the Body simply means, ‘how Catholics are to think about sexuality.’” He added that while the teachings touch on chastity, they encompass much broader meditations on Scripture and human composition, emphasizing love.

A panel discussion will follow Dr. Waldstein’s presentation, allowing for questions from the audience. The seminar will conclude by noon. Registration is encouraged by April 2 for logistical preparations, with more details available at www.emmausinstitute.net/events.
