Icons have been integral to Christian tradition for centuries, functioning as visual prayers and inviting believers into spiritual reflection. The creation of an icon is a meticulous process, involving specific theological and artistic traditions.
Artist Zelasko expressed the personal significance of this process: “I had many hours to sit with the Virgin Mary at the foot of the Cross while painting,” he said. “This is about contemplation and connection—my hope is that this image provides a source of prayer and reflection for all who encounter it.”
On Ash Wednesday, Archbishop Aquila unveiled a new icon as part of the Lenten season's commencement. He also released his latest pastoral note titled "Standing at the Foot of the Cross with Mary," urging followers to deepen their relationship with Christ through prayer during Lent.
